The Written Word

County Kids ReadThe Written Word Committee oversees PECAC's literary activities: The County Reads; A Book in Every Child's Hand; Prescription to Read; and the Children's Book Bank.

The Written Word Committee is responsible for County Kids Read - A Book in Every Child's Hand. The mission of County Kids Read is to address the link between poverty and literacy by providing free books to low income families and at risk children and youth in Prince Edward County.  County Kids Reads works with thirteen community partners and hands out five hundred books monthly.

We currently store and display our books in a newly renovated space at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Picton, where partner organizations, parents, and children can come and make their book selection.

In 2017, County Kids Read will pursue a special literary project that will benefit nearly 200 students at Queen Elizabeth Elementary. Two Canadian children's authors will visit the school, and read from their most recent book. Each child will then receive a signed copy of the book to take home with them. The experience of a live author presentation, and the distribution of books will broaden the horizons of students, and encourage a love of reading and creative writing.

County Kids Read Canadian is made possible by the Community Fund for Canada's 150th, a collaboration between the County Community Fund, the Government of Canada, and extraordinary leaders from coast to coast to coast.
